It is likely that the owners and managers of many smaller businesses are not aware just how demanding the health and safety regulations are. If you have at least five employees and answer no to any of the following questions, you could face stinging fines if a health and safety inspector called!

• Do you have a written health and safety policy?
• Do you assess the risks from your workplace activities?
• Do you record any significant findings from such risk assessments?
• Do you consult with employees or their representatives on health and safety matters?
• Do you provide health and safety training for your employees?
• Do you have employers’ liability insurance and is it on display?
• Do you display health and safety posters?
• Have you appointed someone competent to assist with health and safety responsibilities?

If you employ fewer than five staff, all your answers should still be yes except for a written health and safety policy and the recording of risk assessment findings. Even if you are self-employed you must carry out risk assessments, although if you don’t have any employees you don’t need to display the poster or have liability insurance.
